Gemotions

The invitation sat on the kitchen counter, a stark white rectangle amidst the usual clutter of bills and takeout menus. Sarah stared at it, the words "Retirement Celebration for Eleanor and David Miller" blurring slightly. Her shoulders slumped; she felt a pressure in her chest, a constant, dull ache. She sighed, pushing a stray strand of hair from her face. Another commitment. Another obligation.

Later, she found herself staring at the speech she was supposed to write. The cursor blinked mockingly on the blank page. She took a deep breath, or at least tried to. It felt like her lungs were constricted. She rubbed her temples, the beginnings of a headache blossoming behind her eyes. "Eleanor and David..." the words offered no inspiration, just a heavy weight.

She glanced at the clock. Late. Dinner needed to be started, emails checked, laundry folded. The endless cycle. She dragged herself away from the computer, the unwritten speech a heavy presence in the air.
